Grandparents Day is just around the corner. Why not spoil and surprise that wonder grandparent with a lovely flower arrangement or gift from Flowerama Columbus! Do you have special and fond memories of your grandparents? I know I do. Still remember visiting my grandparents on certain weekends as we lived in the same town at one point. My grandmother, even after a long day of standing on her feet in the ladies department at JCPenney would bring us to her house. She would make us hot chocolate Ovaltine and basically let us have the run of her house. The history of this Nationally recognized day started in 1969 when a young nine year old boy, Russell Capper wrote a letter to President Nixon asking to make a special day for Grandparents. Russell received a thank you note back but it said these types of special observance days needed to be authorized by Congress. However, a housewife from West Virginia, Marian McQuade, kept up her fight for a national holiday to honor grandparents and finally won her cause in 1978. Marian was a kind and caring person who spent many years visiting nursing homes and was touched by the loneliness of the seniors she met and how grateful they were when she would visit them. It was this loneliness and sadness of these older people that lead Marian to lobby for a special day that might encourage the younger family members or just young people in general to take time to visit these senior citizens in nursing homes.
On August 3, 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation to designate the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day. This day was cited as a day to “to honor grandparents, to give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children’s children, and to help children become aware of strength, information, and guidance older people can offer”. Today there are variations of Grandparents Day in numerous countries around the world. In addition to the United States, this list includes Australia, Canada, France, Germany, China, Italy, Mexico, Poland and Spain but many other countries also set aside a special day to celebrate their grandparents. The traditional flower of the U.S. National Grandparents Day is appropriately the “forget me not” which blooms in the spring. Flowerama has a number of splendid arrangements that include the “forget me not” flower.

I think we all agree that grandparents are some of the most special and precious people in our lives. For me there is so much joy in being a grandparent. Plus as the old saying goes, I can spoil the grand kids and then send them home to mom and dad. There is actually some joy in just that.
