Fall is in the air. Football, tailgating, school dances and all of the other wonderful traditions that take place in the fall are beginning. One of those traditions is Homecoming. Typically homecoming is centered around a football game followed by a dance or a banquet. It is a celebrated occasion all across the country in small towns and large. This tradition started back in the early 1900’s and several colleges claim credit for its origination. in 1911 Kansas squared off against Missouri in what they call the first college football homecoming game. Baylor University’s Homecoming tradition dates back to 1909 and Northern Illinois University had there first Homecoming game in 1903. Regardless of who we credit with this wonderful tradition, it is a time to show school and team pride. Celebrated with entertaining parades featuring school bands, tail gate parties with tasty treats and beverages, festive dances and in general just a great time which usually brings a noticeably more pleasant temperature from the dog days of summer. What a great time to send a gift from Flowerama Columbus. Our professional designers will create a scrumptious desert basket guaranteed to wow any tail gate crowd.
Another of the great tradition surrounding homecoming is the selection of the homecoming court. Students are nominated by fellow classmates as the King and the Queen of homecoming or in schools that are single sex, students conversely will nominate a king and a prince (all male schools) or a queen and a princess (all female schools). The students nominated for these honorary roles are typically seniors while occasionally some schools will also nominate underclassmen students to hold the role of prince or princess. The excitement centered on the crowning of these honorary students is preceded by much pomp and ceremony. High energy Pep Rallies, school assemblies or even public ceremonies are often held to make the announcements of the new King and Queen. Though in some cases these announcements are done during the homecoming football game or the dance. Typically the King and Queen from the prior year will crown their successors with the new Queen being crowned first followed by the new King. Even students that are not part of the royalty but are of the homecoming court are called escorts and often middle school or junior high students are included in the high school homecoming festivities.
