A missionary in Ireland during the fifth century according to some studies, Saint Patrick has been referred to as the patron saint of Ireland. It is thought that he was born in Roman Britain but that is uncertain. At the age of 16 it is thought that he was taken from his home in Britain by Irish pirates. He was then enslaved and his job was to look after animals. After living in Ireland for six years he escaped and returned to his home.
Once back in his homeland, Saint Patrick became a cleric. His work as a shepherd when in Ireland made his relationship with God much stronger. He then decided to return to Ireland and practice spreading the belief of Christianity. It is thought that he died on March 17th which is the reason for the holiday.
Some records reflect that Saint Patrick was persecuted by other Christians. They believed that he paid kings and judges to follow him and therefore he must have been motivated by personal gain. Perhaps this was his reason for returning to Ireland now that he had obtained the level of bishop.
There is some mystery and differences of opinion regarding Saint Patrick’s life. According to writings he created, he claimed to have baptized thousands of people and ordained many priests.
The legend surrounding the shamrock is that Saint Patrick used the three-leafed plant in his teachings. He used it as an illustration of the Christian belief of three persons in one God. The story regarding the shamrock was first introduced in a 1726 writing. And of course the shamrock is now the main symbol for Saint Patrick’s Day.
The professional and talented floral designers at Flowerama Columbus have created wonderful Saint Patrick’s Day themed flower arrangements, plants and gifts.
