Flowerama Columbus has wonderful flowers to help you observe World Autism Awareness Day on April 2nd!
World Autism Awareness Day
April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day. This disorder impacts a person’s ability to interact in social settings. It is estimated that Autism effects 1 in 54 children in the United States. Typically by the age of 2 or 3, children will start to show signs of autism although it has occurred as early as 18 months. Like most disorders, early detection and intervention is helpful to lead to positive outcomes later in life.
Psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler, first used the word Autism in 1911 to describe a multitude of symptoms including schizophrenia resulting in extreme cases of social withdrawal. Further defined, Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disorder that is effects behavior and communicative abilities of a person. These people are unable to navigate social interactions which results in restricted behavior.
In 1943, Dr. Leo Kanner wrote an article titled “Autistic Disturbances of Affective Contact”, followed in 1944 by Hans Asperger who published his “Autism Psychopathology Article”. Both of these articles helped to define the disorder of autism. Children of normal and even above intelligence simple are unable to function with their social and communication skills. By 1980, Autism was defined as a disorder completely separate from schizophrenia. These former articles contributed to that finding.
On December 18, 2007, April 2 was officially designated as World Autism Awareness Day by the “United Nations General Assembly”. This day is devoted to causing states to take action in raising awareness about people with autism. The fifth addition of the “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders” submitted in 2013 by the “American Psychiatric Association” combined all of the conditions of autism into one category of severity, varied characteristics and the detectable symptoms. In addition to the normal symptoms related to social disorders, there are frequently added problems related to gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, seizures or sleep disorders, as well as mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression and attention issues.
This April 2nd, the professional floral designers at Flowerama Columbus will be eager to assist you with beautiful flowers, plants and gifts to help observe this special day. This is the perfect occasion to celebrate this day and help with increasing awareness of the characteristics of people with this condition and how all of us can do better to increase our own understanding and promote a caring environment.
