Doggone Graduate Graduation from school, no matter what level, is one of the most exciting days for most of us.  It is the segue to a brand new chapter of your life. And the culmination of years of hard work to get to the point of graduation. If you are the proud relative or friend of someone who is graduating, giving flowers or a lovely gift basket is a great way to show thoughtfulness and pride. They have worked so very hard to get to this point and will appreciate the recognition. For many centuries flowers have been an important symbol of thoughtfulness, love and caring. The Roman the goddess of love, Venus, is often pictured surrounded with different varieties of flowers. The "language of flowers" was translated by many writers in the 19th century. It was done to provide symbolic meaning to colors and types of flowers. Flowers will add to the joy of your friend's or loved one's graduation day. The color and symbolism of blossoming into the world are perfect for the occasion. There are numerous varieties of flowers each presenting different meanings. Below are a few of the options of flowers that you might choose. Roses For centuries Roses have been a favorite flower. The Romans would use roses in celebrations as confetti or as perfume. At one point during the 17th century, roses were used as legal tender by those of royalty. Pink roses symbolize happiness. Yellow roses symbolize friendship, new beginnings, and joy. Orange roses represent enthusiasm and desire. Peonies In China peonies are referred to as the "king of flowers" and symbolize wealth and power. They are very popular springtime flowers frequently used in weddings and baby showers. Aglaonema Golden Madonna Kokedama Health Benefits of Plants Plants produce oxygen by taking in the carbon dioxide we exhale. What a great house partner to have. Not only can house plants make your home more beautiful, they also produce the very air you need to breathe. There are plants that even at night, when other plants are at rest like humans, still continue converting carbon dioxide to oxygen. Orchids and succulents do this so they are the ones to place in your bedroom at night to help keep fresh oxygen flowing. Humidity helps with respiratory distresses. Plants are an excellent source of putting moisture back into the air. Approximately 97% of the water plants take in is then released as moisture. Some University studies document that using plants in your home decreases the occurrences of dry skin, colds, sore throats and dry coughs. Most people do not realize that there are volatile chemical compounds that are released into your home. Things like your rugs, grocery bags, vinyl and cigarette smoke can emit traces of formaldehyde. Then there is benzene that can be present in paint and in books and papers due to the man made inks, solvents and fibers. Once these chemicals are trapped inside of an air tight structure, they can be harmful. The good news is that plants can act as an air purification system. They do this by trapping these harmful chemicals in the soil they are in. Microorganisms in their root systems then convert the chemicals to food. Hospitals and office buildings are great places for plants also. Researchers at Kansas State University reported studies that show patients recover quicker when their hospital rooms have plants in them. In addition, these patients tend to have lower heart rates, blood pressure, less fatigue and anxiety. Consequently the patients are released from the hospitals sooner. Dutch, Norwegian and English  researchers have found evidence in their studies that the overall health of individuals in office buildings and classrooms is also improved by the presence of plants.  Some of the benefits they found are decreases in fatigue, colds, headaches, coughs, sore throats and flu like symptoms. These illnesses fell by as much as 60 percent in buildings that had plants. Classroom attentiveness increased by a whooping 70 percent. The professional floral designers at Flowerama Columbus will help you select the perfect plant to beautify your home. At the same time, [...]

My Girl History of National Nurses Day May 6th is National Nurses Day. What better time to recognize these brave men and women for all they do to care for others. With the recent events they have never been asked to sacrifice more. National Nurses Day kicks off a full week of recognition which ends on May 12th which happens to be Florence Nightingale's birthday. Florence Nightingale was the founder of modern nursing and also a British social reformer and statistician. It was during the Crimean War that she became famous. She lead the way for managing and training hundreds of nurses. Their efforts to care for wounded soldiers was incredible and saved many lives. It was because of this contribution that Dorothy Sutherland of the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare sent a proposal to President Dwight Eisenhower in 1953 asking that there was a proclamation for a "Nurse Day".  One year later a new bill sponsored by US Representative Frances Bolton was introduced to Congress for more consideration. Finally twenty years later in 1974 President Nixon proclaimed National Nurses Week to be observed each May. Then in 1982 National Nurses Day was officially created for May 6th by President Reagan. Making up the highest percentage of the United States healthcare workforce there are over 3 million nurses today. These courageous people have chosen a career that puts them and their families in harms way by all of the illnesses they treat. In fact nurses often sustain more back injuries than construction workers. They also walk an average of over three miles per shift as they care for others. Talk about getting your daily steps in! If you are lucky enough to have a nurse in your life, celebrate their contributions. Nurses are known to have high ethical standards. After all they have seen people in their most vulnerable states and know their weight and keep it a secret. While doctors are vital to saving lives, nurses make their jobs successful. They are on the front line administering shots, nursing wounds and in emotional times caring for dying patients. The professional floral designers at Flowerama Columbus honor the front line healthcare workers and [...]

Johnston Blooms May Day On May 1st, we will celebrate May Day which is a public holiday. Actually this holiday dates back to an ancient festival of Spring. Today in numerous European countries, May Day is celebrated as as a Spring holiday. People dance, sing and bake cakes as part of the festivities. Centuries ago the celebration of the Floralia, festival of Flora the Roman goddess of flowers is the earliest date we know of regarding the birth of May Day. Then the celebration was held from April 27th until May 3rd.  The Floralia was comprised of performances at which hares and goats were released. In addition the people at the celebration were pelted with with beans. Dating as far back as the 2nd century AD,  a celebration called Maiouma was held. Nicknamed a "nocturnal dramatic festival" it was celebrated every three years in the month of May.  The government would set aside funds to pay for all expenses for the thirty day festival which included eloquent banquets and offerings. However, due to the theme of the event surrounding promiscuity, it was eventually cancelled. Since the 18th century, May Day has been a observed by Catholics as a time for devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Her statues are adorned with flowers and school skits are held.  May Day is also a time of a two day feast to honor Joseph who was Mary's husband. Early European settlers to North America celebrated May Day. Today in some parts of the United States people will make baskets filled with flowers and treats. The tradition is to ring the doorbell and run away leaving this sweet basket on the doorstep. In Hawaii, May Day is referred to as Lei Day honoring the culture of the native Hawaiians. Flowerama Columbus has fresh and beautiful flowers for Administrative Professionals Day on April 22! Looking Like a Rock-star Administrative Professionals Day Sometimes referred to as Secretaries Day or Admin Day, Administrative Professionals Day is recognized in a few countries and major cities. In the United States, Canada, Hong Kong and Malaysia, the Wednesday of the last full week in April is designated for observing this day.  New Zealand observes the day of the third Wednesday in April. Belgium, France and the Netherlands observe on the third Thursday or April. Australia observes Administrative Professionals Day on the first Friday of May. And finally South Africa observes on the first Wednesday of September. There are many roles that fall into this category. Secretaries, administrative assistants, executive assistants, personal assistants,  receptionists, client services representatives, and other administrative support professionals are all considered for recognition of Administrative Professionals Day. Typically ways to show appreciation are through the giving of thank you cards, flowers, chocolates, and lunches. The origination of this day dates back to World War II. During this time there was a vast shortage of administrative professionals. This was largely due to the decline of the birth rate during the Great Depression and the extreme post war business that took place. In 1942, The National Secretaries Association was founded. This group formed in order to pay tribute to those that worked in the administrative field and to potentially attract others to also join it. Influential members of the National Secretaries Association that are credited with creating the holiday, are Mary Barrett, C. King Woodbridge, Daren Ball and  Harry F. Klemfuss. Mary Barrett was the president of the Association. C. King Woodbridge was the president of the Dictaphone Corporation. Daren Ball and Harry Klemfuss were public relation account executives at Young and Rubicam. In 1981 the name of the Association was changed to the Professional Secretaries International. Then again in 1998 to the International Association of Administrative Professionals. This name has been trademarked. We all have worked with those Administrative Assistants that go above and beyond to keep things in order. They are appreciated by co-workers, bosses and customers. If you are searching for that perfect flower arrangement, green plant or [...]

Flowerama Columbus has been voted "Best Florist in Columbus" on numerous occasions. Most recently in 2018 For Holocaust Remembrance Day April 21st, look to Flowerama Columbus for a thoughtful plant, flower arrangement or gift.   Peace Lily   Holocaust Remembrance Day Established by Congress, Holocaust Remembrance Day is the United States annual commemoration of the victims of the Holocaust. This year the day falls on April 21st. The actual Hebrew name for the day is Yom Hashoah. Between 1941 and 1945 during which the German invasion of the Soviet Union and the end of the war in Europe in May 1945 occurred, Nazi Germany and their collaborators ordered the murder of approximately six million Jewish people. This systematic killing was devised to eliminate every person of Jewish faith imprisoned by them. Many historians consider the start of the Holocaust era to be 1933. It was during this time, in January of 1933, that Hitler started his rise to power.  Nazi persecution of the Jews became  a main theme of the Hitler regime. No other group was targeted for complete annihilation like the Jewish people were. In the English speaking world since 1960, the term Holocaust is the most widely used named for this horrific tragedy. People of Jewish faith refer to it as Shoah. This is the Hebrew word meaning catastrophe. Shoah refers to the six million Jewish people that were killed. The Holocaust is a tremendous lesson about how our actions, when confronted with injustice to others, can have a life long effect on the outcome. It is with this spirit that the theme of Holocaust Remembrance Day is "Never Again: What You Do Matters". Many German citizens disapproved of the events of the Holocaust era. However, very few took any type of action to try and intervene. Perhaps this was out of fear of reprisal. There were some brave citizens that did attempt to make a difference and stop the violence and help to prevent their Jewish neighbors from being stripped of their citizenship and basic human rights. Flowerama Columbus has experienced and caring floral designers. We would be honored to help find that perfect green plant, flower arrangement or gift basket to send to someone that would be touched by your thoughtfulness on this Holocaust Remembrance Day! Easter Lily Easter falls on April 12. This religious holiday is celebrated by Christians around the world. In Christian belief, this is the celebration of the day of resurrection of Jesus. The date of Easter changes from year to year. The reason for this change is that Easter always falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox. Easter will be celebrated on April 4th in 2021. As is common with the majority of holidays, Easter also comes with a changing of the seasons. Spring is symbolic to the coming back to life by the plants and trees that have been dormant for the winter. Those of us in the Northern Hemisphere look forward to warmer weather and an increase in more daylight. This symbolism of the coming back to life is a correlation to the resurrection of Jesus. History indicates that the name “Easter” was derived from the name of a goddess in England by the name of Eostre. This reference can be found in the writings of the Venerable Bede. He was a seventh and early eighth century British monk. “Bede wrote that the month in which English Christians were celebrating the resurrection of Jesus had been called Eosturmonath in Old English, referring to a goddess named Eostre. And even though Christians had begun affirming the Christian meaning of the celebration, they continued to use the name of the goddess to designate the season.”  His writings were so influential that later Christians adopted and kept the name Easter. It is recognized by that name by the English, Germans and Americans who celebrate this resurrection. Those of the Jewish faith refer to this time as Passover. The Hebrew Bible commemorates Passover as a festival which celebrates the liberation of the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt. This is referenced in the Book of Exodus. During the time of Jesus, Jewish pilgrims flocked to Jerusalem in hope that God would liberate them from the Romans. On one Passover, Jesus traveled to Jerusalem and the resulting disturbance in the Temple ultimately led to his crucifixion. In early America, the Easter festival was more celebrated by Catholics than Protestants. The Puritans of New England considered both Easter and Christmas as festivals for [...]
